Pledge of Allegiance to Hazrat Mahdi

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “There will be a dispute following the death of a Khalifa, and a man of the Bani Hashim will flee from Al-Madina to Makkah (fearing that people will try to make him the Khalifa). (Recognizing him as the Mahdi) some of the people of Makkah will come to him and will bring him out against his will, and they will pledge allegiance to him between the corner (Black Stone) and the Maqam.

“An army will be sent against him from Ash-Shaam, which will be swallowed up by the earth in Al-Baida, between Makkah and Al-Madina. When the people see that, the devoted worshippers (Abdaal) from Ash-Shaam and the best people (Asaa’ib) from Al-Iraq will come to him and pledge allegiance to him. Then there will arise a man from the Quraish whose maternal uncles are from Kalb, who will send an army against him and he will prevail over them. That (defeated army) will be the force of Kalb. The real loser will be the one who is not present when the wealth of Kalb is divided. He (the Mahdi) will divide the wealth and rule the people in accordance with the Sunnah of their Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). Islam will become established on earth and he will remain for seven years, then he will die and the Muslims will offer the funeral prayer for him.” [Majmu az-Zawa’id; Abu Dawud; Musnad Abi Yala; Ibn Hibban]

There are many points to note from this hadith:

1. The man of Bani Hashim, whose hands the people will pledge allegiance at, will be Muhammad bin Abdullah, who will be known by the title Mahdi.

2. If by “Madina” Madina Munawwarra is meant then the ruler, whose death will trigger the dispute of succession, will be Saudi. Alternatively, “Madina” could mean the city of the king. From this city, Mahdi will flee to avoid involvement in the dispute. [Aun al-Ma’bood]

3. As soon as the pledge of allegiance is given to Hazrat Mahdi an army will be sent out to kill him and his followers. This indicates that the Kuffar will also be awaiting Imam Mahdi and will be having informants who keep them updated on events around the Kabah.

4. Abdaal and Asaa’ib are the names of two specific groups of the Awliya (friends of Allah).

5. When the first army sent against Imam Mahdi is swallowed up by the earth in al-Baida (near Dhul-Hulaifa) then Imam Mahdi will take the Mujahideen towards Ash-Shaam and will fight the second army over there. He will defeat it and kill the leader of the army, Sufyani, in Israel near the lake of Tiberias. [As-Sunan Al-Waarda Fil Fitn] This battle is mentioned in the ahadith as the Battle of Kalb.

6. This hadith mentions the sender of the army against Hazrat Mahdi as being related to the Banu Kalb maternally. He will call upon them to help him. This indicates that the Banu Kalb will also be rulers of some Arab state at the time of the emergence of Imam Mahdi. The wretched man to organize this army will be known as Sufyani. [Tabarani]

7. The period of prosperity under Imam Mahdi’s rule will begin with the defeat of Sufyani’s army – the army of Kalb.
