Sitting on Graves

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: "If any one of you were to sit on a live coal until it burns his garment, that would be better for him than to sit on a grave." [Jami at-Tirmidhi - sahih hadith]

If something is marked as a grave then we should not sit on it. Exactly how this damages us we have not been told, but the analogy of the harm done makes it clear that we should not do so: Sitting on something that might set fire to your clothes is preferable to sitting on graves.

Our limited human capabilities are not able to comprehend the world of the deceased to the extent that this warning makes sense to us. But the fact that Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) revealed to Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) to tell us not to do so is sufficient for the believers.
