Dajjal’s Emergence (I) - Between Shaam and Iraq

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Since Allah created Adam there has been no Fitnah greater than the Fitnah of Dajjal (is to be) and Allah sent no prophet except that he warned his Ummah about Dajjal, and I am the last prophet and you are the best Ummah, (therefore), he will emerge among you. If he appears whilst I am among you, I will contend with him on behalf of each Muslim, but if he comes after I am gone then each Muslim must defend himself. And Allah will be the Protector and Caretaker of each Muslim. He will appear on the way between Shaam and Iraq. He will spread Fitnah/disaster left and right (everywhere). O Allah’s servants! At that time remain steadfast!” [Musnad Ahmed]

Shaam refers to the area that is now carved up into Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Israel. This hadith informs us of the approximate place of emergence of Dajjal – between Shaam and Iraq.

Fitnah means trial. The Fitnah of Dajjal is the test he will put Muslims to, pressurizing them to renounce Eeman – anyone’s most valuable possession.

Exams are given according to the level of the student. A student of third grade is not given an exam meant for ninth graders, nor is a ninth grade student given a PhD thesis to write. So also, the Fitnah of Dajjal, being the worst Fitnah, is reserved for the Ummah of the highest caliber and greatest Eeman – the Muslim Ummah.
