One Hundred Good Deeds

Allah’s Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Whoever says, ‘La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la shareeka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shai in qadeer’, one hundred times will get the same reward as given for freeing ten slaves; and one hundred good deeds will be written in his accounts, and one hundred sins will be deducted from his accounts, and it (his saying) will be a shield for him from Shaitaan on that day till night, and nobody will be able to do a better deed except the one who does more than he.” [Sahih Bukhari]

The meaning of this Kalima is: “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah (Alone) Who has no partner; to Him belongs the kingdom (of the universe), and for Him are all the praises, and He has the power to do everything.”

All the sins we commit in life are because we don’t internally believe this. We believe other people and forces to be more powerful than Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). So we commit sins to please the boss, the children, the spouse, the parents, the friends, etc, whoever we hold dearer to us than Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). We say that the universe belongs to Allah but the good return that we expect from people is greater than the good return we expect from Allah, and so we worry more about pleasing them than pleasing Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). It is but natural that who you hold in greater esteem is the one who you are more concerned about to keep happy.

If we repeat this Kalima one hundred times every day we will be forced to think about what it is we are saying. This Kalima resonates with what our souls know to be true and witnessed to in Alam-e-Arwah (the world of souls). When you hear something enough times you end up holding it to be true. This is how the media and advertising work, and you end up gulping down even the biggest lies. Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) tells us to repeat the truth to ourselves to remain on Tawheed – belief in the Unity (the Oneness) and the Power of Allah (subhana wa ta’ala).
