Share With Others

“Allah’s Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) was offered something to drink. He drank of it while on his right was a boy and on his left were some elderly people. He said to the boy, ‘May I give these (elderly) people first?’ The boy said, ‘By Allah, O Allah’s Messenger! I will not give up my share from you to somebody else.’ On that Allah’s Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) placed the cup in the hand of that boy.” [Sahih Bukhari]

This hadith gives us a clue as to why the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) was loved so dearly by his followers. Whenever he was given anything he immediately shared it with those around him. He always acted selflessly and his love and concern for those around him was obvious to all.

In this instance, he was offered a drink but didn’t drink it all by himself. Nor did he embarrass or inconvenience his host by asking for drinks for the others. He drank some of what was offered to him to show his appreciation and then offered it to the others present with him.

This hadith also tells us that we should pass things around by starting with the person on our right.

This hadith also informs us that the elderly are entitled to special attention and care, which is why the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) asked the boy on his right if he would take his turn later and allow the elderly people to drink first.

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) did not act high handedly and just offer the drink to the elderly. He would respect young and old. So, since it was the boy’s right to drink right after him, the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) requested him to delay his turn. Furthermore, when the boy didn’t agree, the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) did not insist, insult, rebuke or ignore him.

The boy didn’t give up his turn out of the love and reverence he felt for the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). He had the chance to drink right after the Prophet from the same cup used by him and didn’t want to pass the chance by.

There is so much to learn from every action of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). Let us put our knowledge to action and begin by sharing as he did.
